The next day we were hoping to go out whale watching but it was still so windy that the boats were not even leaving the marina. Since we woke up so late we had lunch instead of breakfast at a great little Mexican restaurant (Tacos and Nachos). We were hoping to be able to go kite surfing (Frani is an instructor) or surfing that afternoon so we made our way to Frani's surf shop. She let us know that the waves were terrible so renting a surf board would be useless. Also, kite surfing is actually really expensive so we decided not to do that. Frani informed us about a little hiking path along the coast so we decided to do that. At one point we made a wrong turn and opted to walk closer to the coast. Ducking under cacti and stepping over barbed wire was how our adventure began. This was not the hike I imagined. It was basically a cliff with a few plants (Cacti). We continued along the trail so that we didn't look like chickens when Frani asked how the hike went. After slipping for the third time and realizing we were one mistake away from imminent death we decided to head back to the trail. We then realized the trail leads you to a beautiful (and safe) hike through the hills along the Mediterranean Sea. We walked that trail for a couple of hours (where there were many cows!) before making our way back. We grabbed a bottle of wine (Frani had a cork screw.. Phew!) and had a pre dinner drink.
This apartment is located in a little square with four great restaurants so we decided to have supper there. We enjoyed some fried fish, spicy potatoes and a chicken sandwich (they are called Tapas- which is basically appetizers you share). We had a few more beer and Frani joined us for a few minutes after she finished work. She let us know the place to go in Tarifa so Katherine and I made our way to the bars hoping to mingle with locals (that spoke english... you can only say cerveca and gracias so many times). Unfortunately it was Easter weekend and thousands of Spanish people flock to the south for their famous penance celebrations (an easter parade with a marching band and an intense statue of jesus dying & Mary mourning). Anyways, no one spoke english at the bar. So we walked around for an hour until we gave up and went back to Franis. She was still up and her two friends were also over so we swapped stories over a couple of beer and went to bed nice and early (3 am is early here).
Devin says my posts are too long so I am going to break this up into two posts and maybe he will start reading them.
